Daily dose of vitamin D from mushrooms?!

I received the Whole Food Vitamin D from Healthology for free (#gotitfree) from PeopleTail in exchange for an honest review. We get our daily doses of this essential nutrient (vitamin D) from exposure to the sun.

Throughout this pandemic, I have remained indoors the majority of the time - especially in the earlier winter months. This has taken a toll on me both physically and mentally. I am someone who enjoys going on long walks, but over the past few months I have only made a few short trips to the nearby grocery store (essential trips only). Living in Canada, we have almost six months of winter every year - our exposure to sunlight is extremely limited in that time frame! I arrive to work when it is still dark out, and by the time I leave it is dark once again. Canadian studies have shown that 73.5% of 77.5% of women receive inadequate levels of vitamin D. We have to be weary even in the summer months, as many of us apply sunscreen - which actually deflects any vitamin D from being absorbed into our skin. This is why taking vitamin D supplements becomes so important, and why all of us should consider introducing it into our daily lives.

When I first examined the ingredients on the bottle, I could not believe that there was only one single ingredient listed (aside from the veggie capsule shells). Now, this is a name that was unfamiliar to me - agaricus bisporus - say whaaat? Upon researching this ingredient, I realized that it was actually a mushroom! These natural and vegan whole food vitamin D supplements are made using UV treatment on mushrooms.

Our bodies require vitamin D - its main role is to help the body absorb calcium from the intestines. This calcium is necessary to help strengthen and continue to grow/support our bones. It helps regulate our immune system and acts as an antioxidant throughout our body - can prevent autoimmune diseases. Low levels of vitamin D can result in some serious health issues, which include: heart-related illness, diabetes, osteoporosis, depression, and frequent cold/flu. Who knew mushrooms had this kind of power?!

This whole food vitamin D supplement is gluten free, vegan and non-GMO. It is made up of one natural ingredient: agaricus bisporus (25 g/1000 IU vitamin D).

Agaricus bisporus is a type of medicinal mushroom grown in Brazil, Japan, and China. It has been for centuries to prevent or treat a wide range of diseases, including: infections, allergies, and cancers. It has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anti-tumor, and hypoglycemic effects.

I have been taking this vitamin D supplement for the past two weeks, and have noticed that my overall mood has improved. These whole food capsules absorb a lot better than any other form of vitamin D I have tried in the past. They do not upset my stomach and I feel comfortable taking them.

I would definitely recommend this product to anyone looking for an alternative way to increase their vitamin D intake. This is a supplement that you can feel good about taking as it is sourced from whole foods! It is a great supplement for the entire family to take, as we all benefit from vitamin D.
